HB 26-1144

Signed into law on May 4, 2026.

Last reviewed 2026-08-02

House Bill 26-1144, Prohibiting 3D Printing of Ghost Guns and Components, was introduced in the 2026 session, passed both houses, and was signed by Governor Jared Polis on May 4, 2026.

It expands Colorado's original 2023 ghost gun statute, SB 23-279, which had banned the possession and sale of unserialised frames and receivers. Where the 2023 law addressed the parts, HB 26-1144 targets the manufacturing hardware and the production method used to make them at home.

The bill

What it actually does

  1. 1

Makes it illegal for unlicensed individuals to use a 3D printer, CNC milling machine or similar automated manufacturing device to produce or assemble firearms, unfinished frames or receivers, high-capacity magazines, or rapid-fire conversion devices such as switches and auto-sears.

  2. 2

Class 1 misdemeanour for a first violation, escalating to a Class 5 felony for subsequent violations.

  3. 3

Expands SB 23-279 (2023), which banned possession and sale of unserialised frames and receivers, by naming the equipment as well as the parts.
